Can You Buy a Mattress with FSA or HSA?

Yes, you can buy a mattress with your FSA or HSA funds, and it’s not as complicated as many think. The IRS calls mattresses a "dual-purpose" item. They serve an everyday function, but a licensed provider can determine whether one is medically necessary for you. If so, you receive a Letter of Medical Necessity ("LMN" for short), after which the purchase becomes eligible for FSA/HSA spending.

At Turmerry, we’ve built this process directly into checkout through our partner Truemed, so qualified customers can use their pre-tax dollars without leaving the store. Qualified customers save an average of 30% by paying with pre-tax FSA/HSA dollars.

In this article, we’ll go over how the process works, why mattresses qualify for FSA/HSA spending, which Turmerry mattresses are eligible, and what to do if your FSA deadline is coming up.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mattresses are a dual-purpose item under IRS rules; eligibility depends on a licensed provider determining the purchase is medically necessary for you.
  • There are two ways to qualify: use Truemed at checkout, or get a Letter of Medical Necessity from your own doctor and submit for reimbursement.
  • Only the portion of the mattress price tied to the medical need is eligible for reimbursement, not necessarily the full amount.
  • Qualified customers save an average of 30% by paying with FSA/HSA pre-tax funds. Individual tax rates vary. Learn more at truemed.com/disclosures
  • Most FSA plans expire December 31; order early enough for your LMN to be issued and your order to arrive before the deadline.

How Can You Buy a Mattress with FSA/HSA Funds?

You can use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) funds in two ways to buy a new mattress:

Option 1: Use Truemed at Checkout (the easier way)

Three-steps: checking out with Truemed, completing health assessment, making purchase with HSA/FSA dollars for better sleep.

Truemed is a telehealth platform that connects shoppers with licensed healthcare providers at checkout. You complete a short private health survey, a provider reviews it, and if you qualify, you receive a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) by email, usually within 24 hours. The LMN makes your mattress purchase eligible under IRS rules.

As a Truemed partner merchant, Turmerry has Truemed built directly into our checkout. You don’t need to arrange anything in advance or visit a doctor separately. Once you receive your LMN, you can pay with your FSA/HSA card directly, split the payment, or pay with a regular credit card and submit for reimbursement later.

Option 2: Get an LMN from Your Own Doctor

If you already have a doctor who knows your health history, you can ask them to write a Letter of Medical Necessity directly. Take it to your FSA/HSA plan administrator, along with your receipt, and submit it for reimbursement. This path is more time-consuming, but works just as well if you’d prefer to go through your own provider.

Either way, the Letter of Medical Necessity is the key. Without one, a mattress purchase isn’t eligible for FSA/HSA reimbursement, regardless of how you pay for it.

Why Mattresses Are "Dual-Purpose" Under IRS Rules

The IRS divides medical expenses into two categories.

  • Some items are clearly medical. This includes a prescription, a wheelchair, a hearing aid, etc.
  • Other items serve both an everyday function and a potential medical one. Mattresses fall into this second category, which the IRS calls "dual-purpose" items.

Because a mattress has an obvious non-medical use, the IRS doesn’t automatically approve it as a qualified medical expense the way it would a prescription. Instead, eligibility depends on a licensed provider determining that the mattress is medically necessary for a specific person, and then documenting that determination in a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

The LMN also affects how much of the purchase is eligible. With a clearly medical item, the full cost is typically reimbursable. With a dual-purpose item like a mattress, only the portion tied to the medical need is eligible, not necessarily the full price. Truemed calculates that portion for you based on the provider’s determination.

That is why the survey you take at checkout is important. It decides whether your mattress purchase qualifies as a treatment for a diagnosed medical condition, and for how much.

How Latex Mattresses Provide Support and Pressure Relief

Latex is made from the sap of rubber trees, and that gives it a very interesting property memory foam cannot match: natural responsiveness.

When you lie down on a latex mattress, it compresses under your weight and springs back immediately. It does not need time to recover the way memory foam does. That's what makes latex supportive. Plus, latex contours well enough to relieve pressure at the body’s heaviest points, so it doesn't feel too firm either.

In short, latex balances support and pressure relief better than most other mattresses. It's one of the few materials that doesn't trade one for the other. And its responsive quickness means you won't struggle when moving around in bed.

During manufacturing, latex is poured in a pin-core mold, which adds small perforations throughout the layer for additional airflow. Combined with an organic cotton cover and a layer of natural New Zealand wool, the result is a mattress that stays cool, adapts well to your body, and lasts 15-20 years with proper care.

Don’t Let Your FSA Funds Expire!

Most FSA plans run on the calendar year, so any unspent balance is forfeited on December 31. Some plans offer a short grace period through mid-March, or allow a small carryover, but most don’t. According to Truemed’s data, 47% of FSA holders forfeit money every year. That’s pre-tax money you already earned, gone for nothing.

If your FSA deadline is coming up and you’ve been thinking about getting a new mattress, now is the time to act. The Truemed process takes about two minutes for the health survey, plus up to 24 hours for a provider review and your LMN to arrive. Add in shipping time, and cutting it close in late December is a risk you don’t need to take.

A few things to do before the deadline:

  • Check your plan’s specific deadline with your plan administrator, because not all FSA plans expire on December 31.
  • Order early enough for your LMN to be issued and for your order to ship and arrive before year-end.
  • If you’re not ready for a full mattress, a topper or pillow is a lower-cost way to use remaining FSA funds before they expire.
