If you’re shopping for a new mattress and were wondering what the "Truemed" payment option is at checkout, you’re in the right place. Did you know that you can use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) funds to buy a mattress? At Turmerry, we offer Truemed's services directly at checkout so qualified customers can shop with their FSA/HSA funds.
In this post, we’ll walk you through what Truemed is, how it works for mattress purchases (and more), and what you need to expect: from the two-minute health survey to paying with your FSA or HSA card. Qualified customers save an average of 30% by paying with pre-tax FSA/HSA dollars.

Key Takeaways:
Truemed is a telehealth and financial services platform that lets consumers use pre-tax Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) funds to buy preventive and lifestyle health products that a licensed provider determines are medically necessary for them, including mattresses, mattress toppers, pillows, adjustable bases, and more.

Truemed connects you with a network of licensed healthcare providers. At checkout, you complete a short health survey. A provider reviews it, and if your situation qualifies, you receive a Letter of Medical Necessity ("LMN" for short). That letter is what makes your purchase eligible under IRS rules; it’s the same document that has always been used to qualify dual-purpose items for FSA/HSA spending.
Truemed is backed by a16z (Andreessen Horowitz) and is partnered with major brands across the mattress, fitness, and wellness space. At Turmerry, we chose Truemed after reviewing how they handle compliance on dual-purpose items like mattresses. The IRS doesn’t automatically approve these products, but a licensed provider can determine they're medically necessary for a specific customer.
Yes. Truemed operates within a framework that has existed in the tax code for decades: the Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).
The IRS has long allowed FSA and HSA funds to be used for products that aren’t obviously medical, as long as a licensed provider determines the product is medically necessary for that specific person. A mattress, for example, is what the IRS calls a "dual-purpose" item: it serves an everyday function, but a provider can determine that a particular patient needs it for a medical reason. The LMN documents that determination.
Truemed built a platform that makes the LMN process faster and more accessible at checkout for all.

On the provider side, Truemed works with a network of licensed healthcare professionals who review each survey independently. They’re not rubber-stamping approvals, because not every survey results in an LMN. Truemed also works with third-party administrators (TPAs), the companies that process FSA and HSA claims, to ensure their documentation meets plan requirements.
We looked at other options before choosing Truemed. What stood out was how seriously they take the dual-purpose compliance question. It's the part that matters most for a product like a mattress. They’re also transparent about what qualifies and what doesn’t, which is what we want our customers to have at checkout.

Using your FSA/HSA at Turmerry takes about five minutes total.

Step 1: Add eligible items to your cart and choose Truemed at checkout.
When you reach checkout, look for the Truemed payment option. If a "Shop Pay" pop-up appears, close it. Truemed will be visible once you exit it.

Step 2: Complete the private health survey.
The survey takes about two minutes. It’s reviewed by a licensed healthcare provider from Truemed’s network. Your answers are entirely private. Turmerry never sees them.

Step 3: Receive your Letter of Medical Necessity and pay.
If a provider determines you qualify, you’ll receive a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) by email, usually within 24 hours. From there, you have three options:
FSA accounts and HSA accounts were created so individuals could use pre-tax money to pay for expenses used to treat, mitigate, or prevent a diagnosed medical condition. Because FSA/HSAs use pre-tax money, you’re getting more purchasing power for your dollars.
Instead of paying taxes on income and then spending it on health items, qualified customers can use pre-tax funds to invest in their health, including an eligible FSA/HSA mattress purchase.

An individual can contribute up to $4,400 pre-tax to their HSA per year, or $8,750 for a family (plus an additional $1,000 if you are at least 55 years old). Individuals can contribute up to $3,400 pre-tax to their FSA per year (with an additional $500 in employer contributions allowed).
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) is a document issued by a licensed healthcare provider that states a product is medically necessary for a specific patient. It’s what makes a dual-purpose item, like a mattress, eligible for FSA/HSA spending under IRS rules.
The LMN isn’t a Truemed invention. Doctors have written them for decades to help patients use pre-tax health funds for items that don’t fit neatly into the "obviously medical" category. Truemed built a platform that connects shoppers with licensed providers who can issue one at checkout, rather than requiring a separate doctor’s visit.
A few things to know about your LMN:
Using Truemed at Turmerry doesn’t add anything to the cost of your mattress, topper, pillow, or base. There’s a small fee charged by Truemed at the end of the health survey. This fee goes directly to Truemed, not Turmerry, and covers the cost of the licensed provider review.
If you have an FSA/HSA card, the simplest path is to pay with it directly at checkout after you receive your LMN. The eligible portion is charged to your card, and the transaction is done.
If you’d rather pay with a regular credit card or debit card first, you can do that too. Afterward, submit your receipt and LMN to your FSA/HSA plan administrator for reimbursement. Most administrators approve claims within a few days of submission. The exact timeline varies by plan, so check with your administrator if you have a deadline coming up.
Note: At Turmerry, coupons and sale discounts stack with Truemed. Apply any coupon in your cart as usual, then select Truemed at checkout. Qualified customers save an average of 30% by paying with pre-tax dollars through their FSA or HSA.

All Turmerry mattresses are eligible for qualified customers through Truemed. Our mattresses are made with GOLS-certified organic latex, natural New Zealand wool, and organic cotton, and latex gives you genuine pressure relief and support without the stuck-in, heat-trapping feel of memory foam.
Mattress toppers are also eligible, and they’re the lowest-cost way to try latex if you’re not ready for a full mattress. The best-selling latex topper, cooling topper, egg crate topper, and RV topper are all eligible for qualified customers.
Pillows (latex, wool, and buckwheat) are eligible too. See the full list on our FSA & HSA eligible pillows page.
Adjustable bases round out the lineup. The A1 through A4 are all eligible for qualified customers through Truemed.

For most FSA and HSA administrators, claims are approved within a few days of submitting your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity. The exact timeline depends on your plan administrator, so if you’re working against a December 31 deadline, don’t wait until late December!
No. Each survey is reviewed by a real licensed provider, and not every survey results in a Letter of Medical Necessity. Whether you qualify depends on your individual health circumstances as determined by the reviewing provider.
If you don’t qualify through Truemed, you can still purchase any Turmerry product at the regular price.
Yes. Your survey answers go directly to Truemed and the licensed provider reviewing your case. Turmerry never sees your medical information. If you qualify, you’ll receive your Letter of Medical Necessity by email. Your health details stay between you and the provider.
This depends on your plan administrator’s policies, but generally, FSA and HSA funds can only be used for expenses incurred on or after the date listed on your Letter of Medical Necessity. If you’ve already made a purchase, we recommend checking with your administrator before submitting a claim.
