The Sobakawa buckwheat pillows, rooted in Japanese tradition, have been a staple in Asian cultures for centuries, revered as a comforting cervical pillow. Today, they enjoy widespread popularity, especially among those seeking naturally derived sleep aids. Made with the finest buckwheat hulls and organic cotton covers, our buckwheat pillows adapt to the unique contours of your head and neck, offering personalized support that helps out with neck sores, headaches, migraines, muscle tension, etc.
Every pillow comes with a zippered cover, so you can easily add and remove the buckwheat hulls to get the exact loft and firmness you want. Want a taller, more supportive pillow for side sleeping? Add more hulls. Prefer something lower and softer for stomach sleeping? Remove some. This flexibility makes the buckwheat pillow a truly versatile choice for different sleep styles.
At Turmerry, we prioritize your well-being by offering certified safe, sustainable, eco-friendly choices. That’s why we source our buckwheat hulls from the Midwest, USA. They do not contain any added color or synthetic substances. Same goes for the organic cotton cover, which is GOTS-certified. You'll be sidestepping exposure to the harsh chemicals often present in polyester and foam pillows.
The outer cover is made from breathable organic cotton that feels gentle against your skin while letting air flow freely. Inside, the buckwheat hulls naturally promote ventilation, keeping the pillow cool throughout the night. And because the materials are durable and slow to break down, you’re looking at a pillow that can last for years with proper care.
Country of Origin: Organic Cotton Cover Made in India, Buckwheat Grown in USA, Pillow Assembled in USA.
Note: Pillows are filled by volume. The weights are an estimate and will vary based on seasonal crop conditions.
Pro-Tip: Turmerry pillows are much easier to maintain if protected with an outer cover. We recommend using washable covers to make the maintenance process much easier for you.
Try these (they fit best!) -
Remove the buckwheat hulls from the pillow cover - Carefully unzip the cotton cover and pour the hulls into a clean container. Turning the pillow cover inside out helps get all hulls out of the corners. Avoid losing any hulls.
Clean the pillow cover - The organic cotton cover is machine washable. Use cold water and a mild detergent, washing on a gentle cycle. If you want to avoid chemicals, you can also use baking soda or white vinegar instead of detergent. Afterwards, hang it to air dry to prevent shrinking. Avoid putting the cover in the dryer.
Air out the buckwheat hulls - Never wash the buckwheat hulls in water, as it can damage them, causing mold or loss of shape. Instead, spread the hulls out on a flat surface, preferably in sunlight or a well-ventilated area, for a few hours. This airing dries them, removes odors, and keeps them fresh.
Reassemble the pillow - Once the cotton cover is dry and hulls are aired out, refill the cover with the hulls. Adjust the amount to your preferred firmness/loft level.
Spot cleaning - For minor stains on the cover, spot clean with a damp cloth/sponge and let dry thoroughly.
Regular maintenance - Cleaning the cover and airing the hulls every few months helps extend the pillow’s lifespan, which can be anywhere from 5 to 10+ years with good care.
Avoid moisture - Keep the pillow dry at all times since moisture degrades buckwheat hulls and can lead to mold or mildew.
Replacement hulls - If the hulls are past their expiration date, consider replacing them with fresh buckwheat hull refills.
Buckwheat is a nutrient-rich plant that produces small, triangular seeds. It originated in Southeast Asia, somewhere around 6000 BC.
While the seeds are commonly used as a food source (e.g., soba noodles, pancakes), the outer shell, called the hull, is cleaned, dried, sometimes heat-treated (to remove dust and such), and used as a natural pillow filling, among other things.
Buckwheat hulls are lightweight yet firm, allowing them to conform to your head and neck contours. They’re also eco-friendly since they’re a byproduct of the buckwheat milling process.
Buckwheat is the perfect pillow stuffing if you want a firmer feel and adjustable support that works with your body. When you put your head down, the hulls move around and settle to fit your exact shape, holding up your neck and keeping your spine straight. Since air moves easily between all those little hulls, the pillow doesn't get hot like memory foam does, so it stays cool and breathable even on warm nights.
Apart from being adjustable and breathable, buckwheat hulls are also hypoallergenic. They don't attract allergens like dust mites, which works in favour of those who have allergies. Plus, being a natural material, they're free from all the harmful chemicals that can irritate those with chemical sensitivities.
And finally, we cannot ignore buckwheat's ability to last a long time - 5 to 10 years, and even longer, with good care. All in all, buckwheat hulls are one of the best pillow fillings out there. Users often report reduced neck and shoulder discomfort, less frequent headaches, and improved sleep quality with consistent use.
Buckwheat pillows have been around forever in places like Japan, where they've used them for hundreds of years in what they call sobakawa pillows. People loved them because they kept their shape, gave steady support, and helped with neck pain. Eventually, they spread to other parts of Asia, where doctors often suggested them for both comfort and keeping good posture. Now they're a really popular natural choice instead of other pillows. You can adjust them however you want, and with basic care, they often work great for many years.
Buckwheat pillows usually last around 5 to 10 years, depending on how good the materials are and how well you take care of them. If you maintain them right, some really good buckwheat pillows can even last up to 20 years, mainly because the hulls are naturally tough.
A buckwheat pillow is a really good long-term buy that keeps giving you firm support as long as you take care of it and refresh it once in a while. Swapping out old hulls for new ones is easy and cheap, and it makes the pillow last even longer.
Buckwheat pillows are firm. The buckwheat hulls inside keep their shape really well when you put weight on them, giving you a solid, supportive surface that doesn't squish down like regular pillows do.
But buckwheat pillows are also adjustable. You can put in or take out hulls to make them higher/lower, softer/firmer, however you want them. While they're naturally firm, the hulls also shape around your head and neck, giving you support that fits your body without the sinking feeling you get with foam pillows.
Yes, chiropractors do recommend buckwheat pillows for a bunch of reasons that have to do with keeping your spine healthy and helping you sleep better:
Yes, buckwheat pillows are good for side and back sleepers. They also work well for stomach sleepers and combination sleepers. In other words, they're versatile.
A side sleeper can adjust the pillow to make it thicker and firmer. A back sleeper can loosen the fill to create a not-too-high, not-too-low loft. And a stomach sleeper can remove even more hulls for a flatter profile.
Because the buckwheat hulls shift and mold around your upper body, you can fine-tune the height and firmness to suit your sleeping position.
The simplest way to adjust firmness and loft is to add more hulls for a firmer, higher pillow or remove some hulls for a softer, lower loft pillow. Here are some easy steps to follow for this:
To Increase Loft/Firmness
To Decrease Loft/Firmness
Rinse and repeat till you get the right feel. It's that easy!
To clean your buckwheat pillow, first unzip the cover and pour the hulls into a clean container (turn the cover inside out to get them all).
The organic cotton cover is machine washable. Cold water, mild detergent, gentle cycle - then hang to dry. Never wash the hulls; instead, spread them out in sunlight or a breezy spot for a few hours to air out.
Once the cover is dry, refill with the hulls, adjusting the amount for your ideal firmness and loft. Spot clean small stains as needed, and repeat this process every few months to keep your pillow fresh for years.
Always keep it dry to avoid mold, and replace the hulls when they start to lose their spring.
Yes, buckwheat pillows can make a light rustling sound when you move, as the hulls shift against each other. Most people describe it as a soft, sand-like sound that fades into the background once you get used to it. The noise is part of the pillow’s natural adjustability. Every time you shift, the hulls settle into a new shape to support you. Over time, as the hulls break in slightly, they tend to become quieter and quieter.
No, dust mites don’t live in buckwheat pillows. Buckwheat hulls don’t trap moisture and skin flakes the way synthetic or down fill does, so they’re not a welcoming environment for mites. Plus, the constant air circulation through the hulls helps keep the inside dry and less hospitable to pests.
New buckwheat pillows may have a mild, earthy, grain-like, wood-like scent from the natural hulls. It’s harmless and usually fades over a few days to weeks, especially if you air the pillow out.
Yes. Buckwheat pillows are heavier than most pillow types because the hulls are dense. A standard-size buckwheat pillow usually weighs 4-5 pounds, and larger ones can weigh 7 pounds or more.
No, don't microwave or heat buckwheat hulls. Heating them up makes them way too dry and brittle, which messes up their structure. This causes the hulls to break, crumble, lose shape, making your pillow flatter and harder to adjust.
Even if the hulls feel a little warm after microwaving, that warmth goes away really fast, so they're not that great at staying warm anyway.
If you want heat while you sleep, try a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, or get one of those microwavable heat packs instead. You could also just use a heating pad on low. That way, you get the warmth you want without ruining your pillow.
Yes. Buckwheat pillow hulls can be replaced when they start to flatten and lose support. As our buckwheat pillows come with a zippered case, it makes it easy to empty old hulls and refill with fresh, clean ones to extend the pillow’s lifespan.
