For years, pillows have either had a single piece of foam or a single type of filling. Well, it's time to shake that up with our Hybrid Pillow! Soft, supportive, and durable, it's the perfect blend of natural wool and buckwheat hulls - two of the most sought-after pillow fillings, now combined in one. The fillings are separated within an organic cotton cover - wool on one side and the hulls on the other - and a zipper is provided on each side to easily adjust the contents within. Simply flip the pillow to sleep on either filling. It's the best of both worlds - in one single affordable, sizeable package!
Buckwheat hulls are the hard outer casings of buckwheat seeds. They contour wonderfully to your head and neck, providing proper spine support and relieving pressure points. Unlike other pillow fillings, buckwheat hulls allow air to flow freely, keeping you cool and comfortable all night. At Turmerry, we carefully select our buckwheat hulls, sourced from the Midwest US, to ensure the highest quality possible for our pillows. We also provide extra buckwheat hulls at an affordable rate for convenient pillow adjustments (if necessary).
The wool we use goes through a special crimping process that transforms pure New Zealand wool into something extraordinary. This unique method gives the fibers extra loft and spring, resulting in up to 50% more volume (without any added weight), natural spring & resilience (bounces back after pressure), and long-lasting comfort. With all of its other natural benefits, including temperature regulation, moisture control, and gentle cushioning, the wool in our pillows is made to give you deeper sleep every night.
We highly recommend adding a pillow protector to keep your hybrid pillow safe and secure, away from airborne impurities, allergens (like dust mites), liquid spills, hard-to-remove stains, and the like. Our top recommendation is the Organic Cotton Sateen Zippered Pillow Protector Cover. It's undyed and unbleached, made with soft 400 thread count sateen weave cotton.
Looking to partner up our hybrid pillows with a mattress? Look no further than our latex mattresses. We've got a wide collection - from all-foam to hybrid, DIY, Bigg+, and flippable designs. Every mattress uses natural latex foam, combined with top-notch organic materials like cotton, wool, and recycled steel. If you love our pillows, you're sure to love our mattresses.
Pro-Tip: Turmerry pillows are much easier to maintain if protected with an outer cover. We recommend using washable covers to make the maintenance process much easier for you.
Try these (they fit best!) -
Remove the fillings - Carefully unzip both sides of the organic cotton cover, one at a time. Pour the buckwheat hulls into a clean container first, then place the wool fill in a separate breathable bag. Turning the cover inside out helps get all the hulls/wool out of the corners.
Clean the pillow cover - The organic cotton cover is machine washable. Wash on a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent (or baking soda/white vinegar if you prefer natural cleaning). Hang to air dry to prevent shrinkage. Do not tumble dry.
Air out the buckwheat hulls - Never wash buckwheat hulls in water, as this will damage them. Instead, spread them out on a flat surface in sunlight or a well-ventilated area for a few hours. This keeps them fresh, dry, and odor-free.
Refresh the wool - Wool naturally resists dust mites and odors, but benefits from occasional airing. Place the wool fill in sunlight or a breezy spot for a few hours to restore freshness. Avoid leaving it under the sun for too long (1-2 hours should do). Avoid washing wool in water, as it can shrink and lose shape.
Reassemble the pillow - Once the cover is dry and both fillings are refreshed, place the wool and hulls back into their separate zippered compartments. Adjust the quantity of each fill to achieve your preferred firmness and loft.
Spot cleaning - For small stains on the cover, use a damp cloth or sponge to spot clean, then let it dry completely before use.
Regular maintenance - Wash the cotton cover and air out both fillings every few months. With good care, the pillow can last 5-10+ years.
Avoid moisture - Keep both wool and buckwheat hulls dry. Moisture can cause hulls to break down and may lead to mold or mildew.
Replacement fillings - Over time, buckwheat hulls compress and may need to be replaced. We offer affordable buckwheat hull refills to keep your pillow feeling new. Wool can also be replenished if necessary.
Buckwheat hulls are the hard outer shells that protect buckwheat seeds. Once the seeds are separated for food use, the leftover hulls are cleaned and used as a natural pillow filling.
Wool comes from sheep. Ours is sourced from farms in New Zealand and goes through a gentle crimping process to give it extra loft and spring.
Both materials are renewable, natural, sustainable, ethically sourced, and processed without harsh chemicals, making them perfect for our hybrid pillow.
A hybrid pillow combines two pillow types into one - in our case, a buckwheat pillow and a wool pillow. We’ve used buckwheat hulls for one side of the pillow and natural wool for the other. This way, you get the benefit of both materials and can choose whichever feel you like most at the time.
Buckwheat hulls provide firm support with adaptive contouring, while wool provides gentle cushioning with springy support. Together, they create a balance of comfort and support that’s hard to find in a single-fill pillow.
Hybrid pillows are recommended for people who are tired of using just one pillow type and want more variety. They let you switch things up whenever you like, essentially giving you two pillows for the price of one.
Absolutely. Buckwheat hulls and wool complement each other well, which is why they make such a strong pairing in a hybrid pillow. Each material has its own unique benefits, and together they balance firmness with softness.
Buckwheat hulls are the perfect pillow stuffing for a firmer feel and adjustable support. When you put your head down, the hulls move around and settle to fit your exact shape, holding up your neck and keeping your spine straight. Since air moves easily between all those little hulls, the pillow doesn't get hot like memory foam does, so it stays cool and breathable even on warm nights.
Wool, on the other hand, gives the pillow a more cushioned feel. It has a natural springiness that gently supports your head without letting it sink in too much. Wool also helps regulate temperature by keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, while wicking away moisture so the pillow feels fresh through the night.
Buckwheat hulls and wool are also hypoallergenic. They don't attract allergens like dust mites, which works in favour of those who have allergies. Plus, being natural materials, they're free from all the harmful chemicals that can irritate those with chemical sensitivities.
The hybrid pillow is built to last about 5 to 10 years, depending on how well it’s cared for. Both buckwheat hulls and wool are naturally durable, so with proper maintenance, the pillow can stay comfortable for years. Plus, since the fillings are easy to replace, you can extend its lifespan even further with simple refills.
It’s both. One side of the pillow is filled with buckwheat hulls, which create a firmer feel with strong, adjustable support. The other side is filled with natural wool, which offers a softer, springier cushion. This way, you can flip the pillow depending on whether you want firmness or softness at any given time.
Yes. Hybrid pillows are a great option for side sleepers because they let you choose between firm support and gentle cushioning. The buckwheat hull side keeps your head and neck aligned, preventing strain, while the wool side adds softness to reduce pressure on your shoulder.
Yes, the hybrid pillow is a better choice than a memory foam pillow. It combines natural buckwheat hulls and wool, both of which outperform foam in important ways. Buckwheat hulls give you firm, adaptive support that molds to your exact shape without collapsing over time. Wool adds soft cushioning, natural breathability, and moisture-wicking so you stay comfortable and dry through the night.
Memory foam, in comparison, tends to trap heat, has little airflow, and often sags after a few years. It can also give off chemical odors and lacks the long-term durability of natural fillings.
With the hybrid pillow, you get a cooler, more breathable, eco-friendly, and longer-lasting solution that supports your sleep better than memory foam ever could.
The hybrid pillow is fully adjustable, giving you control over both the firmness and loft. Since it contains two natural fillings - buckwheat hulls and wool - you can fine-tune the balance between support and softness until it feels just right. Hulls provide structure and firmness, while wool gives cushioned softness and comfort.
Here are some easy steps to follow for this:
To Increase Loft/Firmness
To Decrease Loft/Firmness
By mixing and matching the right amounts of hulls and wool, you can customize the pillow to be firmer, softer, higher, or lower - whatever feels best for you.
The hybrid pillow’s adjustable design makes it an excellent option for people dealing with neck pain and/or shoulder pain. Buckwheat hulls provide a firm, contouring base that keeps your head and neck aligned, while the wool layer adds softness to reduce pressure on your shoulders.
Since you can adjust both the loft (height) and firmness by adding or removing hulls, it’s easy to fine-tune the pillow to match your body’s unique needs.
For side sleepers, this means enough lift to fill the space between the head and shoulder, helping reduce strain. For back sleepers and stomach sleepers, it means keeping the head supported without pushing it too far forward or backward.
That level of customization makes hybrid pillows far more suitable for pain relief than standard, fixed-shape pillows.
To clean your hybrid pillow, start by unzipping the cover and carefully emptying both the buckwheat hulls and the wool fill into clean containers. (Turn the cover inside out to get everything out easily.)
Once everything is dry, return the hulls and wool to the cover, adjusting the mix to your preferred feel.
For small stains, spot clean the cover as needed.
Always keep your pillow dry to prevent mold. Replace hulls when they lose springiness, and refresh the wool if it becomes too compressed.
Not at all. While buckwheat hull pillows are known for their gentle rustling sound, the wool layer in our hybrid pillow muffles that noise. This gives you the same adjustable support of buckwheat hulls without the distraction. Most sleepers find the sound barely noticeable, and many even describe it as calming, like a faint white noise.
No, dust mites don’t thrive in our hybrid pillow. Buckwheat hulls create a dry, airy environment that makes it hard for dust mites to survive, and wool is naturally resistant to dust mites and other allergens. Together, they make the pillow inhospitable to pests while staying fresh. Plus, with the washable organic cotton cover, you can keep the outside clean and hygienic with ease.
Yes, but only a mild and natural one. Since it’s made with real buckwheat hulls and wool, you may notice a faint earthy or woolly scent at first. This isn’t a chemical smell like memory foam. It’s just the natural aroma of the materials, which most people find pleasant. The scent usually fades within a few hours/days of use, especially if you air the pillow out before sleeping on it.
Yes, the hybrid pillow is heavier than standard foam pillows because of the buckwheat hull filling. Depending on the size you choose and how much you fill it, the pillow can weigh anywhere from 2 to 8 pounds. For instance, the travel and mini hybrid pillows are much lighter than the queen and king hybrid pillows.
No, don't microwave or heat buckwheat hulls. Heating them up makes them way too dry and brittle, which messes up their structure. This causes the hulls to break, crumble, lose shape, making your pillow flatter and harder to adjust.
Even if the hulls feel a little warm after microwaving, that warmth goes away really fast, so they're not that great at staying warm anyway.
If you want heat while you sleep, try a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, or get one of those microwavable heat packs instead. You could also just use a heating pad on low. That way, you get the warmth you want without ruining your pillow.
Yes. One of the best features of our hybrid pillow is that it’s refillable. Both the buckwheat hulls and the wool can be replaced over time:
