Pillows are miraculous, given how they change our sleep for the better. But just to be sure of that, we've created our natural Wool Pillow. Filled with premium crimped wool from the lush, green pastures of New Zealand, it's a material that also goes by the name "nature's miracle fiber". Why? Because it's one of a kind, with its temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, fire-resisting, hypoallergenic properties.
The wool we use goes through a special crimping process - one that transforms pure New Zealand wool into something extraordinary. It gives the fibers extra loft and spring, resulting in up to 50% more volume (without any added weight), natural resilience (bounces back after pressure), and long-lasting comfort.
As the finishing touch, we use a GOTS-certified, zippered, organic cotton sateen fabric encasement. The sateen weave is smooth to the touch, breathable for cooling, and durable enough to protect the wool filling for years. The zipper makes it easy to remove and wash the cover, keeping your pillow clean.
The wool pillow works with your body's natural temperature needs. When it's cold, the wool fibers trap air to keep you warm. When it's hot, they pull moisture away from your skin and let heat escape. So instead of waking up too hot or too cold, you just stay comfortable all night long, no matter what the season throws at you.
Wool is naturally hypoallergenic and resists dust mites, so it's gentle on sensitive skin and won't trigger allergies like synthetic materials can. It pulls moisture away from your body, which keeps the pillow from creating a breeding ground for allergens. In addition, you get steady support and pressure relief that creates a calming sleep environment, so your body can sleep the way it's supposed to - comfortably.
The itchiness in wool comes from larger-diameter fibers (above 30 microns), which are rougher. Our pillows surpass this issue by using fine crimped New Zealand wool with smaller fiber diameters that create a soft, smooth feel without the prickly sensation. Additionally, none of our wool is ever carbonized or bleached, and sheep dipping is never practiced.
Wool has several sustainable attributes: it is rapidly renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable. Annual shearing benefits both the sheep and us humans. Shearing in the spring allows the sheep to begin growing their wool in time to have a full coat by winter. Spring shearing prepares the sheep to have at least 1 inch of wool on their coats in the summer. We also obtain our wool from those who practice cruelty-free shearing and wool processing.
We use organic cotton sateen fabric for the outer cover. It's naturally lustrous and soft. Plus, it's certified organic. No harmful chemicals are involved at any stage of the process - planting, growing, harvesting, and processing are all handled in accordance with GOTS organic protocols. Utilizing farming methods that encourage healthy ecosystems, including eliminating the toxic pesticides and fertilizers common in conventional cotton farming, means a safer environment for farm workers, more productive and sustainable soil, reduced irrigation needs, and a healthier end product for you.
Wool has a mild natural scent which comes from lanolin, a natural oil that protects the sheep's wool and skin from the elements and the environment. Approximately 1% of the lanolin is intentionally left in the wool after the scouring and cleaning process. This ensures conditioning effects and increases the vitality of our wool. We find the majority of our customers either don't notice a scent or find the natural scent to be mild, pleasant, and benign. This scent should dissipate within a few days.
Caring for a wool pillow is one of the easiest things you'll ever do. Of course, to start, we always recommend a zippered pillow cover for an extra dose of protection. Once that's taken care of, all you have to do is wash it occasionally. The cover that comes with the pillow is also washable. And we recommend sunning the wool for 1-2 hours every few months. It can naturally deodorize, bleach, disinfect, and revitalize the filling.
Pro-Tip: Turmerry pillows are much easier to maintain if protected with an outer cover. We recommend using washable covers to make the maintenance process much easier for you.
Try these (they fit best!) -
Remove the wool filling - Carefully unzip the organic cotton cover. Take the wool filling out and place it in a breathable bag or a clean container. Turning the cover inside out helps get all the wool out of the corners.
Clean the pillow cover - The organic cotton cover is machine washable. Wash on a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent (or baking soda/white vinegar if you prefer natural cleaning). Hang to air dry to prevent shrinkage. Do not tumble dry.
Refresh the wool - Wool naturally resists dust mites and odors, but benefits from occasional airing. Place the wool fill in sunlight or a breezy spot for a few hours to restore freshness. Avoid leaving it under the sun for too long (1-2 hours should do). Avoid washing wool in water, as it can shrink and lose shape.
Reassemble the pillow - Once the cover is fully dry and the wool is nicely refreshed, put it back into the cover.
Spot cleaning - For small stains on the cover, use a damp cloth or sponge to spot clean, then let it dry completely before use.
Regular maintenance - Wash the cotton cover and air out the wool filling every few months. With good care, the pillow can last 5-10+ years.
Avoid moisture - Keep the wool filling and the cotton cover dry when in use. Moisture can cause the materials to break down and may lead to mold or mildew.
Wool is a natural fiber that comes from the fleece of sheep. Farmers shear the fleece (essentially giving the sheep a haircut) once or twice a year. We ethically source our wool from New Zealand, where, after being collected, it is cleaned, processed, and crimped to create a naturally soft yet resilient fill that works beautifully inside pillows.
The shearing process is harmless and oftentimes a necessity because sheep don’t naturally shed their fleece. Without shearing, the wool would keep growing, causing the animal discomfort and even health issues. By collecting it responsibly, we get a fiber that’s not only renewable but also long-lasting.
Yes, natural wool pillows are very good for you. Wool is highly breathable and also a natural insulator, so it keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It wicks away moisture, so you don’t wake up feeling hot or damp. On top of that, wool is hypoallergenic (resistant to dust mites and other allergens), and free from harmful chemicals, making it a healthier choice for sensitive sleepers. Add in its natural support and durability, and you’ve got a pillow that’s as good for your sleep as it is for your overall well-being.
Wool pillows and memory foam pillows work very differently, but yes, most would prefer wool over memory foam.
Memory foam molds closely around your head and neck, but it can trap heat and sometimes feel too restrictive. There is also the issue of off-gassing chemicals (VOCs) that accompany traditional memory foam.
Wool, on the other hand, is naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, and adaptive without that “stuck” feeling. It keeps your temperature more balanced through the night and offers a softer, more natural kind of support.
A wool pillow is built to last up to 5 years or more, depending on how well it’s cared for. Wool is naturally durable, so with proper maintenance, the pillow can stay comfortable for years. Plus, since the filling is easy to replace, you can extend the pillow's lifespan even further with simple refills.
Our wool pillow isn’t locked into being strictly firm or soft, as it naturally adjusts. The wool fill usually gives it a medium feel that balances support with cushioning. It’s firm enough to keep your head and neck aligned, but still soft enough to contour comfortably. Since wool can be fluffed up and pressed down, you get a pillow that feels supportive without being overly rigid.
Yes, wool pillows can be great for side sleepers. They provide enough loft and support to fill the gap between your head and shoulders, keeping your spine aligned. At the same time, the wool fill has a bit of give, so it cushions pressure points nicely.
A wool pillow may have a mild natural scent, and that comes from lanolin - the natural oil in sheep’s wool that protects it from the elements. After cleaning, about 1% of this lanolin is left in the wool to keep it conditioned and extend its life. Most people either don’t notice the scent at all or find it light and pleasant. If you do notice it, the smell usually fades within a few days as the pillow airs out.
The simplest way to adjust firmness and loft is to add more wool for a firmer, higher pillow or remove some wool for a softer, lower loft pillow. Here are some easy steps to follow for this:
To Increase Loft/Firmness
To Decrease Loft/Firmness
Rinse and repeat till you get the right feel. It's that easy!
Yes, our wool pillow can be good for neck pain and shoulder pain. Proper pressure relief (through contouring) and spine support are the two things needed to ensure a healing environment, and wool naturally delivers both. It gently contours without flattening. For side sleepers, this reduces shoulder strain, while for back and stomach sleepers, it minimizes neck tension.
To clean your wool pillow, start by unzipping the cover and carefully emptying the wool fill into a clean container. (Turn the cover inside out to get everything out easily.)
Once everything is dry, return the wool to the cover, adjusting it to your preferred feel.
For small stains, spot clean the cover as needed.
Always keep your pillow dry to prevent mold.
No, our wool pillow is not noisy. Unlike pillows filled with buckwheat hulls or other materials that can shift and make sounds, wool is silent. It stays in place while you sleep, giving you consistent comfort without any crinkling/rustling noises.
No, dust mites don’t thrive in wool pillows. Wool naturally resists moisture buildup, which is what dust mites need to survive. Its breathable, temperature-regulating fibers create an environment that’s less inviting for allergens.
No, wool pillows aren’t hot to sleep on. In fact, wool is one of the best natural temperature regulators out there. It keeps you cool when it’s warm by wicking away moisture and allowing airflow, and it keeps you cozy when it’s cold by trapping just the right amount of heat. That’s why wool is often called a “year-round comfort” material. It naturally adapts to your body’s needs.
No, our wool pillow isn't heavy. Wool has a light, airy structure that keeps the pillow supportive without weighing it down. Compared to denser options like latex and memory foam, wool pillows feel easier to adjust.
Yes, you can replace the wool inside your pillow to extend its life. Wool filling naturally compresses over time, but instead of replacing the whole pillow, you can refresh it by adding new wool or swapping out the old fill. We recommend adding crimped NZ wool, if possible. It's the one we use for our wool pillows.
