        Mattress FAQs

        1. What is a latex mattress?

A latex mattress is a type of mattress made of latex foam layers. Latex, which is liquid rubber, is obtained from rubber trees through "tapping" and then converted into foams by baking. These mattresses are known for their durability, breathability, responsiveness, bounce, and ability to conform to the body's shape, providing excellent support and pressure relief.

        2. Do Turmerry latex mattresses require a mattress foundation or a box spring?

Turmerry latex mattresses do not require box springs, but we do recommend a good bed frame. For the best pairing, we recommend an adjustable bed base or a natural wood platform bed frame . Adjustable base beds provide flexibility and modern features, while wooden platform beds maintain eco-friendliness and ensure a sturdy base.

        3. What Turmerry mattress should I choose if I'm a - side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper, or combination sleeper?

The best mattress for side sleepers is a soft or medium-firm mattress, providing enough cushioning for the sides and shoulders without sacrificing support for the spine.

The best mattress for back sleepers is a medium-firm or firm mattress, as it offers the necessary support for the lower back and keeps the spine aligned.

The best mattress for stomach sleepers is a medium-firm or firm mattress to prevent the hips from sinking too deeply.

The best mattress for combination sleepers is a medium-firm mattress that balances support and comfort, accommodating various sleeping positions.

        4. Can you sleep on a latex mattress if you are allergic to latex?

An individual develops a latex allergy when their immune system reacts negatively to natural rubber latex. If you have a latex allergy, we do not advise purchasing a latex mattress. Latex allergy symptoms may include hives, itchy skin, or even anaphylaxis, which can cause throat swelling and extreme difficulty breathing.

        5. What is the best mattress for back pain?

The best mattress for back pain is considered to be a medium-firm one. This level of firmness is often recommended for people with back pain because it offers enough support to keep the spine in a neutral position while still providing comfort for a good night's sleep. Heavyweight individuals (above 230 lbs.) may require a firmer mattress.

best mattress for back pain - all foam mattresses with good support and motion isolation for combo sleeper

        6. What is the best mattress for arthritis?

The best mattress for arthritis offers a balance of support and pressure relief. A medium-firm mattress is often recommended as it provides the necessary support to keep the spine aligned while offering enough cushioning to relieve pressure points, which is ideal for arthritis patients. Latex mattresses are particularly effective because they contour to the body, reducing stress on joints.

best mattress for arthritis - pressure relieving for side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers

        7. What is the best mattress for hip pain?

The best mattress for hip pain should be able to relieve pressure off the hips while also providing enough support to maintain a neutral spinal alignment. Based on this, we recommend a medium-firm latex mattress. If you're a heavier individual (above 230 lbs.), you may require something firmer for better support.

best mattress for hip pain and best mattress for shoulder pain

        8. What is the best mattress for heavy people?

Heavy people, generally classified as weighing above 230 lbs., tend to require more support than the average-weight sleeper. Thus, the best mattress for heavy people is usually a firmer one with a thickness of 12 inches or above. We recommend going for a firm or extra-firm latex mattress, as they are wonderfully supportive without taking away any of the comfort and contouring needed.

best mattress for heavy people - hybrid mattresses with excellent edge support and firmness - shouldn't trap heat

        9. What is the best mattress for couples?

The best mattress for couples is usually queen-size or above, as the sizes below queen can make you and your partner feel cramped. Firmness and thickness would depend on each partner's preferences. A medium-firm latex mattress of 12 inches usually works best for most sleepers, but if you or your partner are plus-sized, a firmer mattress is recommended.

best mattress for sleeping partner - medium mattresses with perfect combination for different body types

        10. What is the best mattress for kids?

A twin, twin XL, or full-sized latex mattress, with a soft or medium-firm firmness is the best mattress for kids. Latex provides great support, comfort, breathability, and durability, which can be beneficial for growing bodies. For younger children, a twin or twin XL mattress is usually sufficient. These sizes are also more space-efficient for smaller bedrooms.

best mattress for kids - new bed with perfect balance of comfort and support for growing children

        11. How do you take care of your Turmerry latex mattress?

Your latex mattress should be a priority that you take care of on a bi-weekly or monthly basis. Not only does it keep the mattress clean, but it also avoids the buildup of any impurities that might later harm your health. If the steps listed below are properly carried out, your latex mattress's lifespan will be extended, preventing you from having to buy a new mattress for a very long time!

        • Vacuum and spot-clean whenever necessary

Under no circumstances should you machine wash one of our latex mattresses, as the latex foam will start to deteriorate within a few years due to its warped state. Instead, vacuum once or twice a week to get rid of surface-level debris, and then spot-clean any areas where liquid spills have occurred.

All the dust, dirt, and crumbs from the mattress surface can be gently vacuumed away with an upholstery attachment. Any stain from bodily fluids and liquid spills can be removed by spot cleaning (gently dabbing the stained area) with mild detergent and water. Make sure you air out and dry the mattress fully after spot cleaning.

Vacuum and spot clean whenever necessary - so the mattress feels fresh on use
        • Rotate the mattress

When you rotate your mattress, the top end (where you rest your head) moves down to the bottom end (where you rest your legs) and vice versa. We suggest rotating your latex mattress every three to six months. Your mattress is strengthened to prevent sagging and dipping thanks to the rotations. Since the latex foam will continue to have an even consistency over time, you'll receive excellent support.

Reminder: Avoid flipping the hybrid and egg-crate models, as doing so compromises the valuable benefits they offer.

Rotate the mattress based on use for best sleep
        • Use a mattress topper

Mattress toppers are foam layers that are removable and have special properties of their own. By placing a mattress topper on top of the mattress, you can reduce wear and tear on the mattress surface and preserve it for when the mattress topper is no longer necessary. In addition to what the mattress offers in terms of comfort and support, a mattress topper will also offer more of both.

If you are concerned that adding a mattress topper will reduce the benefits of the mattress, you can purchase one that closely resembles the surface of the mattress. For instance, a latex egg-crate mattress topper would be the best option if you already own a latex egg-crate mattress. Similarly, a natural latex topper can be used with an organic latex mattress.

Use a mattress topper or mattress pad to make mattress firm or soft for optimal comfort
        • Protect your mattress with a cotton cover

Prevention is better than cure, the doctors say. The same holds true for mattresses. Don't wait for your mattress to be in danger before adding a mattress cover. Prevent it early! Our latex mattresses come with an organic cotton cover. Although this cover is helpful, we advise utilizing a second mattress protector cover. When it comes to protection, two are always better than one. Adding a second cotton cover will not impair any of the mattress's qualities, so you needn't worry about that.

Protect your quality mattress with a GOTS certified organic cotton cover

        12. What Turmerry mattress size should I choose?

We offer all the standard US sizes, from twin to Cal king. For the Latex RV Mattress, we offer RV-friendly sizes like RV Bunk, Full XL, Short Queen, Short King, and more.

        • Twin Latex Mattresses

A twin latex mattress measures 38 x 75 inches. The smallest of the group, it is intended for single sleepers who are less than 6 inches tall, and for teens and toddlers who are outgrowing their cribs. The twin bed is portable and can fit in small spaces (7 x 10 feet).

        Twin Size Mattress
        • Twin XL Latex Mattresses

A twin XL latex mattress measures 38 x 80 inches. It shares a similar width as a twin but is greater in terms of length. Twin XL mattresses are best for single sleepers who are taller than 6 inches. Students and toddlers of similar heights or who are expected to reach a similar height can also choose the twin XL. Similar to the twin, it is portable and can fit in small spaces (8 x 10 feet).

        Twin XL Latex Mattresses
        • Full Latex Mattresses

A full latex mattress measures 54 x 75 inches. This size, also known as "standard double," is ideal for single people who want to spread out and take advantage of a generous mattress surface. It isn't as good for couples as a queen- or king-size bed, though. A full mattress is an option for couples who don't mind giving up sleeping space, are on a tight budget, or have a small living space. It's also suitable for guest rooms.

        Full Latex Mattresses
        • Queen Latex Mattresses

A queen latex mattress measures 60 x 80 inches. Couples who are on a budget of less than $1000 and require more space than a full-sized bed typically choose this mattress size. A queen size mattress is also ideal for single people who move around a lot while sleeping. For some of our mattresses, you can select the "split queen" option if you and your partner have different bedding requirements, such as different firmness and thickness requirements.

        Queen Latex Mattresses
        • King Latex Mattresses

A king latex mattress measures 76 x 80 inches. Couples with kids or pets frequently opt for the king-size bed. King beds are always a good option for families. For single sleepers, however, it might be excessive. But if you prefer a lot of space, then go for it, we say! A king mattress can also be purchased as a "split king," in which the mattress is divided into two parts, each with its own set of customizations.

King Latex Mattresses - non cheap mattress size
        • California King Latex Mattresses

A California king latex mattress measures 72 x 84 inches. It can easily accommodate an entire family of three or four. The increased length is beneficial for taller customers, particularly those over the 6-inch mark. Cal king mattresses are perfect for master bedrooms measuring 12 x 12 feet, though a room measuring 12 x 14 feet would be preferred to accommodate the mattress's additional length.

California King Latex Mattresses - pricier mattresses
        • RV Latex Mattress Sizes

For RV's, we offer up to 20 compact sizes and accept custom orders as well. You can choose from a variety of bunk, full, queen, and king sizes. We also provide most of the above-mentioned standard sizes if your RV accommodates those instead.

        13. Why choose a natural latex mattress over a memory foam mattress?

The conflict between natural latex mattresses and memory foam mattresses is an age-old tale that has gained traction in recent years. Memory foam originated as a byproduct of NASA research, where it was used to cushion test pilots during flights. Latex has an even longer history, dating back to indigenous cultures in Mesoamerica, where it was used to make rubber balls for ballgames.

Take a look below, and you'll find out how and why natural latex often triumphs over memory foam.

        • Natural latex is safer and healthier

Natural latex, derived from natural sources such as rubber trees, is manufactured with a very low percentage of safe additives (3-5%). The remaining latex foam is completely natural, making the entire bed safe to sleep on. Memory foam is a synthetic material created by combining chemicals with polyurethane. When you unpack them for the first time, they are known to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during off-gassing episodes.

Natural latex is safer and healthier without off gas
        • Natural latex is breathable and sleeps cooler

Natural latex is a breathable substance. It doesn't retain heat when you're sleeping on it, allowing the surface to remain cool. Some mattress brands and manufacturers perforate the latex foam to increase its breathability. Memory foam, however, holds onto body heat to be able to conform better to your body. As the density of memory foam increases, it becomes more difficult for the retained heat to dissipate. For memory foam to be cool, synthetic materials like cooling gel must be added.

Natural latex is breathable and cooling - ensures sleep comfort
        • Natural latex is bouncier and more responsive

Foam made from natural latex is responsive and springy to the touch. You can easily move about the mattress because there are no restrictions on your movements. Sleepers who alternate sides or switch positions will adore natural latex. By eliminating the "stuck" sensation that you frequently experience in memory foam beds, you start to feel more like you are sleeping on top of the mattress than inside of it. Memory foam conforms more readily than it responds.

Natural latex is bouncier and more responsive - soft mattress with good support for better sleep
        • Natural latex is resilient and durable

Vulcanization, a process used in the production of natural latex, strengthens and makes it more difficult to separate the bonds between its molecules. This significantly boosts latex's resilience, which in turn increases its resistance to sagging and other wear-and-tear problems. Mattresses made of natural latex have a lifespan of 20 years or longer with proper maintenance. The lifespan of memory foam is much shorter, hovering around 7-9 years. Low-density memory foam has even shorter lifespans, typically lasting only 4-6 years before showing signs of wear and tear.

Natural latex high quality mattress is resilient and durable - better than gel foam and memory foam mattresses
