MLK Day

More than 2,000 buses, 21 chartered trains, 10 chartered airplanes, and an untold number of cars descended upon Washington on August 28, 1963. Police forces in Washington, D.C., including reserve officers and firefighters, mobilized to full capacity outside. There were 5,900 police officers on duty that day.

Finally, when dawn broke, the full splendor of The Great March on Washington would be witnessed on the streets of Washington, D.C. The Washington Monument served as the starting point of the march, which was intended to continue to the Lincoln Memorial. At the monument, the speakers and musicians greeted the protesters. With a total population estimated to be in the neighborhood of 250,000, the advocacy for the rights of African Americans was finally gaining national and international recognition.

A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin are credited with organizing the Great March, which is associated with aiding in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

A boisterous and captivating speech would be delivered to everyone present there that day. As he stood atop the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, surrounded by his brothers and sister, the last speaker of the day would cry out, "I Have a Dream." A speech that has since become a powerful symbol of the struggle against racism. An iconic moment in American history and one of the most impactful speeches of all time, delivered by none other than the civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Who was Martin Luther King Jr.?

Martin Luther King Jr. is a renowned figure, most prominently known for being a strong leader and activist in the Civil Rights Movement.  Martin Luther King Sr., his father, was also a man of similar stature. As a local leader of the Civil Rights Movement, MLK Sr. served on the NAACP executive committee in Atlanta and the Civic and Political League as an officer. MLK Jr. is said to have been encouraged by his father to become active in the movement.

Through nonviolence and civil disobedience, King fought for the civil rights of people of color in the US. He took part in and led demonstrations in support of other civil rights, such as the right to vote, labor rights, and the elimination of racial segregation. Being a Baptist minister, he was frequently motivated by his Christian convictions and Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent activism.

Prior to being chosen as the founding president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), he was in charge of the Montgomery bus strike in 1955.

During the 1963 March on Washington, King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. With the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the civil rights movement made significant legislative progress.

King received the Nobel Peace Prize on October 14, 1964, in recognition of his nonviolent struggle against racial injustice. Two of the three Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 had him involved in their planning. He broadened his focus in his later years to include opposition to the Vietnam War, capitalism, and poverty.

On April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, MLK Jr. was assassinated. He was preparing for a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be known as the  Poor People's Campaign. His passing was followed by a period of widespread mourning and an ensuing rage that resulted in riots in numerous American cities. In 1977 and 2003, King received posthumous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal, respectively.

What is MLK Day?

MLK Day, also known as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The event is observed annually on every third Monday of January.

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day was promoted initially by labor unions. Following King's passing, U.S. Representative John Conyers and U.S. Senator Edward Brooke introduced legislation in Congress to declare King's birthday a public holiday. The U.S. House of Representatives put the legislation up for a vote in 1979, but it fell short by five votes of the required number to pass. The cost of a paid holiday for federal workers and the fact that King never held public office were two major objections raised by opponents.

The King Center soon started requesting assistance from the business world and the general public. The single "Happy Birthday," which was released in 1980 to raise awareness of the campaign, and Stevie Wonder's hosting of the 1981 Rally for Peace Press Conference solidified this tactic's success. The petition to pass the law garnered six million signatures, making it one of the largest pro-issue petitions in American history.

The holiday was initially opposed by President Reagan due to financial considerations. However, Reagan later approved the bill to designate Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday on November 2, 1983.

The first Martin Luther King Jr. Day would be observed on January 20, 1986. Due to compliance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, MLK Day is observed on the third Monday instead of his actual birthday. Parades and marches are usually held to mark the day, along with speeches by political and civil rights leaders.
