A group of women from Columbus, Georgia, specifically from the Ladies Memorial Association, are often credited with starting the Memorial Day tradition in the South. In March of 1886, Mary Ann Williams, in her capacity as Secretary, requested assistance from the press in setting up an annual holiday to decorate soldiers' graves across the South.
