If you're not near Charlotte, the 120-day trial period is your in-home test drive. Order online, sleep on it for up to 120 days, and decide from the comfort of your own bedroom. Most people find it a far more useful test than spending a few minutes in a showroom, as your body needs more than 10 minutes to tell whether a mattress is right for you.

For most people, online is the better deal, especially when there's a generous trial period involved.

In-store has one real advantage: you can feel the mattress before committing. But 10-15 minutes on a showroom floor, fully clothed, with a salesperson standing nearby, isn't a realistic test of how a mattress will feel after a full night's sleep. It's a guess at best.

Buying online from a direct-to-consumer brand also means you're not paying for the showroom, the real estate, the salesperson's commission, or a bunch of other stuff. Those costs often get baked into the in-store prices. The same quality mattress almost always costs less online.

And with a 120-day trial period, the one advantage of buying in-store (trying before you buy) essentially disappears. You get four months of real sleep to make your decision, with no pressure and no audience.

You can also use a Google search for "mattress stores near me" or "mattress stores in [your city]" to pull up a map with locations, hours, contact details, and reviews. Google Maps works well for this, too.

Once you have a shortlist, reviews are your best filter. Apart from the star rating, read what people say about the mattresses after a few months of use.

Ask about all of the materials first. Latex, memory foam, innerspring, hybrid? Is the foam certified? What's the fire barrier made from? A brand must be able to answer all of these questions.

Check the certifications. GOLS for organic latex, GOTS for organic textiles, OEKO-TEX for chemical safety, and eco-INSTITUT for indoor air quality. If a mattress is marketed as natural/organic but carries none of these, that claim is likely unverified.

Lie on the mattress in your actual sleep position. Most people lie flat on their backs in a showroom out of habit. If you're a side sleeper, lie on your side. Spend at least 10-15 minutes on each mattress you're seriously considering.

Ask about the trial period and return policy. A brand confident in its product will offer at least 60-90 nights. Also, ask specifically how returns work so you're not confused later.

Ask about the warranty and what it covers. A 10-year warranty is better than a 1-year warranty. And a warranty that only covers very minute details isn't as protective as it sounds. Make sure to get specifics.

It depends entirely on where you buy it from. Buying directly from Turmerry (online or offline) is straightforward. The 120-day trial means you have four full months to decide. If it's not right, you contact us, and we'll guide you through the return process.

Traditional brick-and-mortar stores are often the most restrictive. Many have a no-return policy on mattresses once they've been slept on, citing hygiene reasons. Some offer an exchange but not a refund. Others charge restocking fees, pickup fees, or both, which can run anywhere from $50 to a few hundred dollars. It's always good to ask before you buy.

The best times to buy a mattress are during mattress sales, like Memorial Day, Labor Day, Presidents Day, Veterans Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Brands run their biggest discounts around these holidays.

Ask for the certifications and verify them yourself. The certifications worth looking for:

• Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): For latex. Requires at least 95% raw natural rubber and audits the entire supply chain from farm to finished product. The strictest latex certification available.
• Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): For textile components like cotton and wool. Covers the full production process, not just the raw material.
• OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests the finished product for over 1000 harmful chemicals and confirms they're absent.
• eco-INSTITUT: A German testing body that checks for harmful emissions and chemical residues. Particularly rigorous on VOC off-gassing, which matters a lot in an enclosed bedroom.
• Greenguard Gold: Certifies that the product meets strict chemical emission standards for sensitive environments. Originally developed for schools and healthcare facilities, so the bar is high.

For GOTS and OEKO-TEX, ask for the certificate number and verify it yourself on their public databases. For the others, ask for the certificate document and the name of the certifying body so you can confirm it's legitimate.
